Abstract Although imprisoned women represent about 6% of the total prison population in England and Wales, their numbers have been increasing rapidly during the past several years. Recently, statistics also show that ethnic minorities and foreign-born women are overrepresented in the prison system in Britain. Using the intersectional approach, this article uses official prison data between 1993 and August 2005 to analyze the relationship between ethnicity and nationality and the imprisonment of women in England and Wales. The picture that is presented by the analysis is one in which foreign nationals of ethnic minority background, primarily Blacks, are overrepresented in prison in England and Wales.
